Hanger Down House bed and breakfast is located in the beautiful West Sussex countryside on a quiet lane that gets very little traffic. We're only a 3-minute drive from Arundel town centre in a very peaceful setting though the B and B is only a mile from the A27 that runs to Chichester, Portsmouth and Southampton. The guesthouse is in a perfect location for a short or long break in Arundel or the wider West Sussex area.

 

If you'd prefer to walk to Arundel from the bed and breakfast it's an easy 15-minute stroll that takes you to the foot of the characterful Maltravers Street that leads up to Arundel Cathedral or Surrey Street that will take you past various pubs, tea rooms and restaurants and into the centre of Arundel and onwards to the entrance of Arundel Castle.

 

Arundel railway station is only 1.5 miles from the B and B and Ford railway station is within a mile of the guesthouse. Arundel train station is on a main London line that only takes one and a half hours to Victoria. From Arundel and Ford railway stations you can also easily travel to Brighton, Chichester, Southampton, Portsmouth and Gatwick Airport.

The quaint town of Arundel offers many excellent shops, restaurants and pubs where you can easily while away several hours just wandering its pretty streets. With visitor attractions such as Arundel Castle, Arundel Cathedral, Arundel Wetland Centre and the annual Arundel Festival and Gallery Trail, Arundel is an excellent place to spend some time.

 

On the doorstep of the bed and breakfast is the South Downs National Park. The Park has over 3,300km of rights of way and offers a landscape as diverse as it is breath-taking. The walking routes within the South Downs National Park are plentiful and walkers and ramblers of all levels can find a route to suit. When you visit Arundel a visit to the Park is a must, if you’re an outdoors adventurer or a family who just wants to stretch their legs on a sunny afternoon. The South Downs Way is a 100-mile route and can be found only a few miles north of Arundel accommodation at Hanger Down House. Two-wheels are also welcome in the South Downs on any of the 1,200km of car-free bridleways. The South Downs Way is the only national route that is fully traversable by bike and The Monarch Way cycle route runs through Arundel to the South Downs where you can also find the South Downs Link cycle route, taking you to Amberley, Southwater, Horsham and further afield in the West Sussex countryside. Hanger Down House B and B can provide secure bike storage during your stay in Arundel when you stay at the bed and breakfast. If you fancy a snippet of the South Downs Way Alison can arrange cycle hire from Southwater Cycles which includes drop off and collection of the bikes you hire, with advance notice.

 

Arundel Castle was built in 1068 and is one of the longest inhabited country houses in England. Visit this historic site and see the grand estate rooms and wonderful gardens. The castle is in the heart of Arundel and is easy to access from Hanger Down House bed and breakfast. Sitting at the top of Arundel is the majestic Arundel Cathedral, home of the annual Corpus Christi, festival of flowers. The wonderful designs that run the length of the aisle are a sight to behold and well worth a visit while staying at the guesthouse during September. 

 

If you’re looking for water activities then staying in Arundel is a great option. When you visit Arundel you can take part in activities ranging from boating, kayaking and canoeing to swimming and fishing, all are in easy reach of the B and B. Winding through Arundel is the River Arun and here you can relax on a river cruise or cast your line for a spot of fishing with a day ticket from local tackle shops. Trout fishing at Chalk Springs Fishery is also available in Arundel making Hanger Down House the perfect accommodation when you stay in Arundel. The south coast is only 10-minutes away where you can find sailing facilities, beaches and amusement parks.

 

For history enthusiasts, visit Arundel. With a wealth of historic buildings and events a stay in Arundel will keep the family entertained for your entire stay at Hanger Down House bed and breakfast. Not only is Arundel Castle and Arundel Cathedral only a few minutes’ drive from the B and B there are many other historic venues in Arundel and in the nearby West Sussex area. Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre is set in the South Downs National Park, just to the north of Arundel, showcases the industrial heritage of the South East. Exhibits include a narrow-gauge railway and bus service and several craft displays take place each day such as blacksmithing and pottery. The Weald and Downland Living Museum tells the 1,000-year history and stories of the people who lived and worked in the rescued rural buildings. Demonstrations include milling and cooking. Bignor Roman Villa is the stunning remains of a Roman home with world-class mosaic floors in a spectacular Downland setting with fantastic views of the South Downs. For wildlife watchers Arundel Wetland Centre, a wildland and wetland nature reserve, is the place to go to spot resident and visiting birds. There's plenty to entertain the family and it's a convenient distance from your accommodation when you stay in Arundel at Hanger Down House. Along the River Arun and Swanbourne Lake offer boats for hire allowing you to see more of the Arundel and West Sussex countryside. You may also spot wildlife such as kingfishers and water voles as you meander along the water.

Fontwell Park Racecourse is approximately 10 minutes by car from Hanger Down House B and B. A few minutes more and you can visit Goodwood Racecourse, home of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, affectionately known as Glorious Goodwood. Glorious Goodwood is a popular time at Hanger Down House bed and breakfast so make sure you book your accommodation with us early if you’re planning to stay in Arundel.

 

Goodwood also plays host to the famous Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival. Goodwood Festival of Speed showcases cars, boats and motor racing at this prestigious annual event.
